Graduation and Diploma Checklist

  • If you are expecting to graduate at the end of spring
    quarter, you will need to file an application to graduate
    via Axess by April 13, 2008. If you encounter any
    difficulties in filing your application via Axess, please
    contact the Office of the University Registrar at
    registrar@stanford.edu.

  • For additional questions and assistance regarding
    requirements for graduation, please contact the
    Office of the University Registrar at
    registrar@stanford.edu. For a “to do” checklist
    regarding your graduation, visit http://registrar.
    stanford.edu/students/academics/graduation.htm.

  • A diploma will be ready for presentation to you only if you follow the instructions provided in a separate e-mail to you from the the Office of the University Registrar. For general information regarding diplomas, visit

Academic Attire Rentals

The Stanford Bookstore (academic attire)
The Stanford Bookstore will offer rental gowns and hoods, caps for purchase, and other Commencement items, which students or families can order online. These can be ordered online starting March 1 at www.stanfordbookstore.com. For more information visit the caps and gown section on this website.

Please Note:

  • Ordering begins on March 1.

  • The final day to order online is Monday, April 28.

  • Academic attire will be available for pickup at the Bookstore beginning Friday, June 6. Pickup hours are as follows:

    Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

    Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

    Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

    Sunday, 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  • If you are unable to pick up attire during these hours, please contact the Bookstore to make special arrangements. For further information, please visit www.stanfordbookstore.com or call (650) 329-1217 or (800) 533-2670, extension 394 (Susan Grimes).

  • Return gowns at the front of the Bookstore or at one of the other designated drop-off areas around campus after the Individual Diploma Award ceremonies. Drop-off locations will be detailed in the Commencement program you will receive at the Commencement ceremony at Stanford Stadium.

  • The Bookstore also offers Commencement announcements and other graduation memorabilia.

Weekend Ceremonies General Information

  • Personal Items: There is no place to leave valuables
    such as coats, sweaters, purses, or cameras during
    the Commencement weekend ceremonies. If you bring
    these items, please plan to carry them with you.

  • Smoking: No smoking is allowed during the processions
    or in the seating areas during Commencement weekend
    ceremonies.

  • Alcoholic Beverages: No alcohol is allowed
    before, during, or after the ceremony processions,
    or in the seating or surrounding areas during the
    ceremonies. Violation of this rule may result in
    ejection from the ceremonies.

  • Pets: No pets are allowed in the ceremony
    locations except for service animals working with persons
    who have disabilities.

  • Golf Carts: No golf carts will be allowed in the Stadium.
    If you have mobility concerns, please make arrangements
    to be driven down to the Stadium field by a member of the
    Diversity & Access Office who will be stationed at
    the Gate 1 of the Stadium.

Ceremony Participation Information

Saturday, June 14
Baccalaureate Celebration

All Candidates report to Memorial Church by 8:45 a.m. in cap and gown.

  • The Baccalaureate celebration on Saturday morning is a multi-faith ceremony – a time of thanksgiving and reflection for graduates, their families, and friends. The celebration begins at 9:30 a.m.

  • The Chief Baccalaureate Marshal will meet you inside Memorial Church to provide general information and explain procedures for the procession and seating in the Main Quadrangle.

  • When it is time for the procession to line up, the marshals will come to the front of the church and lead the candidates. The chief marshal will lead the procession.

  • Please follow the marshals' instructions and remain in your assigned column. You will be seated in the Main Quadrangle with the people in front and back of you in line, NOT those beside you.

  • Marshals will guide you to your seat. Upon reaching your row, please move in quickly to prevent the backing up of the column.

  • Remain standing until the platform party has reached the stage. After everyone has been seated on the stage, you may be seated.

  • The Baccalaureate celebration will last approximately one hour. Immediately following the benediction, there will be a recession of the platform party.

 

Sunday, June 15
Bachelor’s Degree Candidates
8:45 a.m. Lineup: Stanford Stadium Gate 1

  • Please put on your cap and gown before starting to march. The ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m.

  • Bottled water and Commencement programs will be available as you enter Gate 1.

  • Golf Carts: No golf carts will be allowed into the Stadium. If you have mobility concerns, plase make arrangements to be driven down to the Stadium field by a member of the Diversity & Access Office, who will be stationed at Gate 1 of the Stadium.

  • Please follow the marshals' instructions and take your position on the field.

  • If you wish to sit next to a particular graduate, please plan accordingly.

  • The marshals and staff from Stanford Events will guide you to your seats on the field. Upon reaching your row, please move quickly into it to prevent the backing up of the column.

  • Be seated until the faculty procession begins, then please stand and remain standing until all faculty have been seated on the stage.

  • During the ceremony and following the Commencement address, Provost Etchemendy will ask you to stand to be presented for the conferral of your degree by the university president. You may be seated as soon as President Hennessy confers your degree.

  • No diplomas are awarded at this ceremony.

  • Following the Benediction, please stand for the faculty recession.

  • After the recession, report to the location of your major department's Individual Diploma Award ceremony, as indicated on the last page of the Commencement program.

 

Sunday, June 15
Advanced-Degree Candidates
8:45 a.m. Lineup: Masters Grove

Please put on your cap, gown and hood before starting to march. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m.

  • At Masters Grove the school flags and signs will be posted to indicate the beginning of each school column.

  • The flag bearer and marshals from each school will lead their respective schools.

  • When it is time to start the procession, the Chief Advanced Degree Marshal will give the signal to depart and will lead the columns out of Masters Grove and into the Stadium.

  • Bottled water and Commencement programs will be available as you enter Gate 1.

  • Please follow the marshals’ instructions and remain in your assigned
    column. All columns will begin to march onto the field at the signal of the Stanford Events staff person and will proceed to the advanced-degree seating areas. A Stanford Events staff person will assist you with seating.

  • You will be seated on the field with the people in front and back of you in line, NOT those beside you, so if you wish to sit next to a particular graduate, please plan accordingly.

  • Provost Etchemendy will recognize candidates who have completed the
    requirements for advanced degrees.

  • The dean of your school will ask you to stand and will present you for your official degree conferral;.

  • President Hennessy will then confer your degree, after which you will be asked to take your seat.

  • No diplomas are awarded at this ceremony.

  • Following the Benediction, please stand for the faculty recession.

  • After the recession, report to the location of your school’s Individual Diploma Award ceremony, as indicated on the last page of the Commencement program.

The Stanford QUAD (Stanford's undergraduate yearbook)

The QUAD is an independent, student-run organization registered with the Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) . Established in 1895, The Stanford QUAD has sought to commemorate the moments that have shaped the academic year. The QUAD is designed to cover undergraduate experiences in Student Life, Academics, Residences, Athletics and Organizations. The QUAD also features Freshman, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Photos from Commencement will also be featured in this year's QUAD.
