Ceremony Instructions for 2020 and 2021 Graduates

Welcome back to the Farm! We look forward to celebrating with you. See below for information on line-up procedures and requirements for entry into the Baccalaureate and Commencement ceremonies.

Entry is to the ceremonies is conditional, see requirements below:

Individuals returning or coming to campus following international travel must adhere to the Stanford University Guidelines for Travelers.

Cap and gown is required. Carry your cap and gown, don't wear it through gate security. 

All items brought into the venue must comply with the Public Safety Clear Bag Policy. Graduates with prohibited bags or items will be asked to use the complimentary bag check, located near Gate 3 in the Varsity Lot. All persons and items are subject to search.

Only eligible graduates are allowed to be in the lineup area and walk in the procession.

Entry, late entry, and re-entry will be at the discretion of event management.

Once checked in and through security, follow the signage and proceed to the lineup area to await further instructions.

Commencement 
Have your mobile pass ready to be scanned at gate entry. A mobile pass was emailed from the Athletics Ticket Office to graduates who indicated they planned to participate. If you didn't receive a mobile pass, you can check in at the verification table outside of the gate area with a photo ID.

Baccalaureate Ceremony

Frost Amphitheater Arrival - Friday, June 10 - 2:30 p.m.

Graduates are asked to gather in Frost Grove area, near the Bing Concert Hall patio, at 2:30 p.m.

  • 2:30 p.m. - Grove Gate entrance opens and security check-in begins
  • 3:15 p.m. - Latest arrival time - If you are late you will miss your place in the processional and seating!
  • Frost Grove Gate entrance is on the northwest side of Frost Amphitheater, near Bing Concert Hall patio off of Lasuen Street.
  • IMPORTANT: Bag check is located near the Grove Gate. Bags will not be permitted in the procession, so please be sure to check them before entering the gate.

Procession Lineup

  • Once checked in and through security at the gate, proceed to the lineup area in the Grove where you can enjoy refreshments, and pick up a program. Class of 2020 sunglasses will be available to the first 1000 graduates.
  • General information and instructions for the procession and seating in Frost will be provided.
  • When it is time for the procession to line up, follow the pathway between Bing and Frost toward Galvez. Turn right at the gate in the fence and loop back toward Lasuen. 
  • If you wish to sit next to a particular graduate, line up together in front of each other, not side by side.

Procession and Seating

  • The procession will begin at 4:00 p.m.
  • Please put on your cap and gown before starting to march.
  • When it is time to start the procession, the Chief Marshal will give the signal to depart and will lead the processional into Frost Amphitheater.
  • Look for and listen to the Baccalaureate Marshals. They will be your guides and get you where you need to be!  Please help them and listen to the directions when in the seating area. Please take your seat when you hear their announcement. They will be wearing red ribbons with the word: “MARSHAL” so you can’t miss them! Other event staff will be there to help too.
  • Upon reaching your row, please move in quickly to prevent backing up of the processional.
  • The stage party will follow the graduates. Please remain standing until everyone has been seated on the stage.

Ceremony

  • The ceremony will begin at approximately 4:15 p.m. and end at approximately 5:15 p.m.
  • Immediately following the benediction and drumming blessing, there will be a recession of the stage party only. Please reman seated for the recession from the stage and keep the recessional pathways and aisles clear until the recession is complete.

Commencement Ceremony

Stadium Arrival - Saturday, June 11 - 7:30 a.m.

All undergraduate and advanced degree graduates will enter the stadium at Gate 12, then proceed to the lineup areas.

  • 7:30 a.m. - Gate 12 opens and security check-in begins
  • 8:15 a.m. - Latest arrival time - If you are late you will miss your place in the processional and seating!
  • Parking - General Commencement parking will be available in the following parking lots near the stadium:
    Galvez Lot
    Arboretum Grove
    Lasuen Grove
    Eucalyptus Grove
    Toyon Grove

  • Stadium Gate 12 is located at the North side of the Stadium (see map below).
  • Have your mobile pass ready to be scanned at the gate. A mobile pass was emailed from Athletics Ticket Office to graduates who indicated they planned to participate. If you didn't receive a mobile pass, check in at the verification table outside of the gate with a photo ID.
  • IMPORTANT: Bag check is located near Gate 3 in the Varsity Lot. Read the Public Safety Clear Bag Policy carefully. If you have a bag that is not approved to enter the stadium, you must leave it at the complimentary bag check before coming to Gate 12 or you will have to walk back over to the bag check area.
  • UNDERGRADUATES: As you plan possible WACKY approaches to your entrance into the stadium, please review the important information outlined on the Guidelines for Graduating Seniors document for an overview of what to bring, what NOT to bring and what to expect when you arrive. The Wacky Walk has been a popular undergraduate tradition and it is in this spirit that we remind you that the Wacky Walk needs to be safe and comfortable for everyone. Please read these guidelines carefully.

Procession Line-up

  • Once checked in and through security at Gate 12, follow the signs to your lineup area as noted (see diagram below): 
    • Undergraduate lineup area is to the left between Gates 13-14. 
    • Advanced degree lineup area is to the right between Gates 11-9.

  • UNDERGRADUATE LINEUP INSTRUCTIONS
    • After entering Gate 12, undergraduates should proceed straight ahead past the landscaped area, then turn to the left and follow the pathway to Gate 14.
    • Undergraduates from all schools will line up and process into the stadium together.
  • ADVANCED DEGREE LINEUP INSTRUCTIONS
    • After entering Gate 12, advanced degree graduates should proceed directly to the right and follow the pathway along the fence toward Gates 11-9 and enter the lineup for their school as noted below:
      • Gate 11 - Law, Education and Engineering advanced degree graduates proceed to Gate 11, then turn left around the landscaped area, enter the line for your school, and walk back toward Gate 12. Once the Engineering line at Gate 11 is full, Engineering graduates should proceed down to Gate 10 or 9.
      • Gate 10 - Earth, Medicine and Engineering advanced degree graduates proceed down to Gate 10, then turn left around the landscaped area, enter the line for your school, and walk back toward Gate 11. Once the Engineering line at Gate 10 is full, Engineering graduates should proceed down to Gate 9.
      • Gate 9 - H&S, Business and Engineering advanced degree graduates proceed down to Gate 9, then turn left around the landscaped area, enter the line for your school, and walk back toward Gate 10. Once the lineup area is full, any remaining graduates can lineup in the walkway area along the stadium fence.
    • The flag bearer and marshals from each school will lead their respective schools in the procession.
  • Grab a bottle of water and program from the tables before you line up. Water and programs for Advanced Degree graduates will be between Gates 12 - 11, and for Undergraduates will be between Gates 12 - 13.
  • If you wish to sit next to a particular graduate, line up together in front of each other, not side by side.

  • Look for and listen to the Commencement Marshals. They will be your guides to the field and get you where you need to be!  Please help them and listen to the directions when on the field.   • Our marshals will take possession of any signs or objects that exceed their designated size or obstruct the view of others before the main ceremony begins on stage.
  • The undergraduate procession will be followed by the advanced degree procession and then faculty procession. Please remain standing until all faculty have been seated on the stage.

Ceremony

  • The ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m.
  • Provost Drell will recognize graduates who have completed the requirements for degrees and you will be asked to stand to be presented for your official degree conferral.
  • President Tessier-Lavigne will then confer your degree, after which you will be asked to take your seat. No diplomas are awarded at this ceremony.

Recession

  • The ceremony will end approximately 11:30 a.m.
  • Following the Benediction, please stand for the faculty recession from the stage.
  • Please keep the recessional pathways and aisles clear until the recession is complete.

Graduate General Information

Contact Information: Please contact commencement@stanford.edu with questions related to events and ceremonies.

Processional/Ceremony: Only eligible graduates may participate in the Commencement ceremony. Graduates must also be attired in the appropriate cap, gown, and hood and show their mobile pass to participate. No one else is allowed in the procession or in the graduate seating area on the field.

Stay Safe Protocols: If you feel sick or test positive for COVID-19, DO NOT attend any in person events on campus and stay home. The main Commencement ceremonies will be livestreamed for anyone who is unable to attend.

It is strongly recommended that all attendees be fully vaccinated (including boosters) or, for those unable to be vaccinated, obtain a negative test for COVID-19 within 24 hours prior to attending any events, however vaccination status and test results will not be verified. Face coverings are no longer required at Stanford, but continue to be strongly recommended on-site regardless of vaccination status. Limited PPE will be available at the stadium. Current policies and protocols at Stanford related to the COVID-19 pandemic are available on Stanford University Health Alerts.

International Graduates: Individuals returning or coming to campus following international travel must adhere to the Stanford University Guidelines for Travelers.

Personal Items: There is no place to leave valuables during the Commencement weekend ceremonies. If you bring personal items, please plan to carry them with you. All items brought into the stadium must comply with the Public Safety Clear Bag Policy. Anyone possessing prohibited items will be asked to return them to their vehicle, take them to the complimentary bag check tent or dispose of them at the gate.

Smoking: No smoking is allowed during the processions or in the seating areas during Commencement weekend ceremonies.

Alcoholic Beverages: No alcohol is allowed before, during, or after the ceremony processions, or in the seating or surrounding areas during the ceremonies. Violation of this rule may result in ejection from the ceremonies.

Pets: No pets are allowed in the ceremony locations except for service animals working with persons who have disabilities.

Golf Carts: No golf carts will be allowed in the Stadium. If you have mobility concerns, please make arrangements to be driven down to the Stadium field by a member of the Diversity & Access Office who will be stationed at Stadium Gate 1.
