A Commencement Weekend update for 2022 Graduates - May 11, 2022
May 11, 2022
Dear Stanford graduates,
With your Commencement Weekend just a few weeks away, we are writing to share an update on developments and answer questions about this opportunity to gather and celebrate with classmates, friends and family.
Planning to walk in Stanford Stadium?
Don't forget your student ID! Your ID will be scanned at Gate 12, the graduate lineup area, to allow access to the field. If you don't have your ID you will need to check in separately at the solutions desk. Only eligible students/graduates will be allowed in the graduate lineup area, in the ceremony procession and on the field.
Note that this requirement is only for graduates who are walking in the ceremony. Tickets are not required for family members and other guests attending the ceremony.
Ordered your cap & gown yet?
As a reminder, academic attire is required to participate in many activities – including the ceremony in Stanford Stadium and Baccalaureate in Frost Amphitheater– and is available to rent or purchase from the Stanford Bookstore. Initial deadlines have passed, so order your regalia now!
Here’s where to place your order.
What’s a grad to wear?
For those wondering what to wear, we’ve prepared some suggestions for styles of attire at your ceremonies, Senior Dinner on the Quad and other events, along with a few other tips for the weekend.
Remind your guests about the Bay Area climate – encourage them to be prepared for both cool and hot weather, even on the same day.
What’s happening – and when?
Your weekend officially begins with Senior Dinner on the Quad on Thursday evening. Then comes Baccalaureate on Friday morning and the President’s Reception on Saturday afternoon, along with school, department and many other celebrations throughout the weekend, including your Commencement ceremony on Sunday morning.
More details are available in the online schedule, which will be updated as the time gets closer.
Ready to (Wacky) Walk?
Undergrads: The Wacky Walk is happening! Details and guidelines will be shared as the weekend approaches. We can’t wait to see your getups.
Who can come?
Guests are welcome, with no limits and no reservations required for most weekend activities, including Baccalaureate and the Commencement ceremony in Stanford Stadium. Details regarding individual departmental and other ceremonies are available here.
The stadium ceremony will last about two hours (including procession and recession times) and will be held rain or shine. Everyone should expect warm weather and dress accordingly, as the stadium has little to no shade. A livestream in Maples Pavilion will be available for guests who would like to watch from an air-conditioned space.
For those who can’t attend in person, Commencement ceremonies and some other events will be livestreamed and recorded for remote viewing. KZSU, Stanford's radio station, will broadcast the ceremonies live on FM 90.1 and kzsu.stanford.edu.
Finally, a word about helping keep each other safe. As you know, with certain exceptions, face coverings are not required but continue to be strongly recommended on campus. Please continue to respect the choices that individuals make about their own masking.
