Planes

San Francisco International (SFO) is approximately 25 miles north and San Jose International (SJC) approximately 20 miles south of Stanford. Both airports offer public transport, shuttle and hire car options that will get you here.

Oakland International (OAK) is also an option but is further from campus and can be more difficult to travel to/from using public transport and shuttles.

Automobiles

From San Francisco

By car, Stanford is approximately 1 hour from downtown San Francisco. You can take the 101 South (shorter but often busier) or the 280 South.

From San Francisco International (SFO)

From San Jose

By car, Stanford is approximately 40 minutes from downtown San Jose. You can take the 101 North (shorter but often busier) or the 280 North.

From San Jose International (SJC)

Bicycles

Please see the general bicycle routes around the main campus. Parking for bicycles will be located at Gates 5 and 6 near the Stanford Stadium on Commencement Sunday.

Public Transportation

For general information about traveling to campus on public transit please visit the university's public transit site.

Caltrain

Caltrain connects San Francisco and San Jose (including both airports) with a stop in Palo Alto. Attendees using Caltrain should get off at the Palo Alto station.

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit)

BART provides limited transit service on the San Francisco Peninsula and throughout the East Bay. BART services do not extend past the Millbrae Station. Stanford riders can connect to BART via Caltrain and bus connections at the following stations:

  1. Millbrae – served by Caltrain
  2. Fremont – served by the Line U East Bay Express
  3. Union City – served by the Dumbarton Express

Marguerite Shuttle

Stanford's free shuttle service, the Marguerite, meets most Caltrain services at the Palo Alto station and can take you to many popular destinations on campus.
